Why Patent Figures Matter for Technology Forecasting

GetFocus predicts which technologies will win by measuring how fast they improve. That measurement depends on what's inside patents: the inventions, the data, the evidence of progress.

For mechanical patents, the figure is the invention. A mechanism is hard to explain in words alone. For chemistry and materials patents, performance data is often embedded in tables rendered as images. For electronics, circuit diagrams say more than any paragraph of description.

When figures are excluded from analysis, a piece of the disclosure is missing. And when that disclosure feeds into Technology Improvement Rates, competitive landscapes, and R&D strategy, the missing piece matters.

What You Can Do Now

When you open a patent family card, Odin automatically ingests the figures alongside the text. No setup, no extra steps.

In Chat with Invention, you can ask multimodal questions that combine text and image content in a single interaction. Here are a few examples of what that looks like:

Identify components in a technical drawing. Ask Odin about a labeled figure, say a wide-format printing apparatus, and it maps every reference number to its function. The housing, the ink containers, the media rolls, the delivery tray. What used to mean flipping between the figure and the description now takes one question.

Pull structured data from image-based tables. Many patents bury formulation data, test results, and performance metrics in tables that are rendered as images. Ask Odin for the data, and it extracts it into a clean, readable format. Component names, percentages, values. Ready to use.

Ask questions that span both. Does figure 7 support what the text claims? What mechanism is described in paragraph 12 and illustrated in figure 3? Odin pulls from both sources to give you one answer, not two disconnected pieces.
