The storage industry's engineers were not wrong about the facts. They were pricing the present; the rate was pricing the trajectory.
It was, flash looked permanently uneconomic for bulk storage. The rate measured how fast that gap was compounding shut, which was the only question that mattered.
Write endurance was a legitimate enterprise objection. Controllers, wear-levelling and over-provisioning were improving at the measured 60–70%/yr along with everything else in the stack.
Perpendicular recording delivered; HAMR promised decades more. Roadmaps are intentions. Rates are behaviour, and HDD's never left the low 30s.
Reliability conservatism is rational in storage. It delayed adoption by years, and changed the destination by nothing.
We forecast the improvement rate from two citation metrics, cycle time and knowledge flow. Both were visible the whole time.
Unusually, the two technologies iterated at similar speed, cycle times for both sat between four and six years. The difference lived entirely in knowledge flow: solid-state's roughly doubled, from 0.8 toward 1.7, while magnetic storage stayed between 0.3 and 0.8. Same tempo, far bigger steps.
