Proof from history

We saw the battery signal in 2001. Two decades before the market did.

Hydrogen out-filed every other technology for 25 years. The rate said batteries from the first data point. Real platform output, replayed from patents public at each date.

What the industry did

Washington funded a $1.2B Hydrogen Fuel Initiative in 2003 and the industry filed into fuel cells. Hydrogen out-filed every other technology for 25 years, peaking near 2,900 families a year — and it still out-files batteries today.

What the signal said

NMC batteries measured 54%/yr against hydrogen's 21% from the first data point in 2001, and never gave the lead back. Filing volume pointed at the wrong technology for a quarter of a century.

$9B+ spent by automakers on fuel cells by 2014 alone; $20B+ cumulative with a further decade of programs and public funding — while fuel-cell cars stayed below 0.1% of sales, outsold 1,000-to-one by battery EVs.
